Researchers have concluded that yoga works like antidepressants and psychotherapy and helps tackle most mental health problems like depression, ADHD and even schizophrenia, giving the ancient Indian practice a scientific thumbs up! Like other medications prescribed for  psychiatric disorders, yoga helps modulate levels of key chemicals like serotonin and cortisol, a review by scientists at Duke University has confirmed. They found sometimes yoga works as a standalone remedy, while in other as an adjunct with other medicines. ‘Additionally, there is likely to be a positive group effect when one practices yoga in a group,’ Dr Meera Balasubramaniam, the lead author of the research told Hindustan Times. Yoga is practiced by over 200 million people worldwide, with over 100 million in India and 16 million in the US. While yogis have long claimed that that the practice has many benefits this is the first time medical science is recognising its potential to tackle major illnesses. Yoga has sometimes been hurt by outlandish claims made by its masters like Baba Ramdev who claimed that yoga could cure HIV/AIDS.    Also Read - Food insufficiency during COVID-19 pandemic increases depression and anxiety symptoms

‘Yoga has become such a cultural phenomenon that it has become difficult for physicians and patients to differentiate legitimate claims from hype,’ the authors of the Duke research have written, in their paper published on January 24 in the respected journal Frontiers in Psychiatry. ‘Our goal was to examine whether the evidence matched the promise.’ Students who practiced yoga were able to use techniques they learnt to calm themselves if they got agitated. ‘There was also some evidence of improved homework compliance,’ Balasubramaniam said.
