When people across the world are getting famous with just one selfie circulated and shared on social media, they are only bound to be conscious of how their face is perceived. With the obsession of getting it all right and looking stunning, cheek implants have become popular to get the perfect click which accentuates your face giving your high cheekbones. Founder of the Aesthetic Clinic and Facial Plastic Surgeon and Consultant at Saifee and Breach Candy Hospitals, Mumbai, Dr Debraj Shome, tells us all about cheek implants and what it could do for you.
What are cheek implants?
Cheek implants are a plastic surgery implant carried out to highlight the cheekbones. The most common material used incheek implants is solid silicone.
There are certain types of shapes that such an implant can bring about on your face:
Malar
These types of implants are the most common of all, they are placed entirely on the cheekbone tissues. Due to this, the cheeks become more prominent and get a 'higher contour' as a side profile of the face.
Submalar
These kind of implants are not meant to be positioned on the cheekbones. These are used to enhance the mid-face, especially when a person has a 'skinny' physical appearance with reference to this particular facial area.
Combined
These are extensive implants which might be useful to enhance the cheekbones as well as the mid-face.
What happens in the procedure?
An incision is made by the facial plastic surgeon on the inside near the the top gum line and the implants are generally slid into the spot. The procedure is executed right after giving sedation and it takes around half-an-hour per side. Patient generally recovers within 10 days.
Any post surgery specifications?
There may be a slight amount of pain which would subside within a few days post surgery.
Any side-effects?
In very rare cases is the patient prone to infections. This depends on how qualified and good the chosen surgeon is.
How much does this procedure cost approximately?
A cheek implant may cost around Rs 75,000 for each side.
What do people need to know about cheek implants?
What patients (and even some doctors) do not understand is that the face is like a tripod stand - how you photograph depends on the bony prominence of your face, namely the forehead, the nose, the cheeks and the chin, and the relation between them. In many cases, if the chin can be enhanced and the cheekbones made higher, the nose itself will become more symmetrical on its own.
Earlier, we needed to perform orthognatic surgery to align the bones and change the way the chin or the cheekbones looked. This was a debilitating surgery and patients needed many weeks to recover. Now, with these new-age chin and cheek implants, you can get a 30-minute procedure performed under local anesthesia, go back to work in 3 days and have high cheekbones and a better looking chin for life.
