Doctors at Sion hospital, Mumbai have made a Guinness World Record after successfully removing a kidney tumour weighing around 5.5 kg. The operation was done on Munju Devi, a 28-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with a kidney tumour around three years back. The feat was achieved by a team of doctors under the guidance of Dr Ajit Sawant, Head of Urology, Sion Hospital Mumbai.
Manju Devi, who is a native of Darbhanga district, Bihar, complained of an abdominal lump. She was living with the pain for almost three years as doctors refused to operate her because of the size of a tumour. The condition not only compromised her quality of life but also lead to severe pain on the right side of the abdomen. It was only after a CT scan that it was detected an enormous tumour had completely replaced the right kidney. (Read: 5 facts about kidney cancer you need to know)
According to reports, the woman experienced persistent pain on the right side of the abdomen and was even passing urine in the blood. Moreover, the tumour, which was around 31cm by 19cm in size, started to compress the liver and also pushed other organs namely the pancreas, intestines and also the blood vessels to the left side. The size of a normal kidney is around 110gm to 140gm, however, the weight of a kidney tumour, in this case, was 5.5kg, which made it to the Guinness World records.
After a series of rejection, doctors at Sion hospital agreed to operate on her. The surgery, which took around 8 hours, was done by Dr Ajit Sawant and his team. Although the surgery was done in November 2016, it took more than six months for the validation of the Guinness World Record. After the surgery, the patient was kept on a ventilator for a day and around a week under observation as she was recovering and is currently doing fine.
