US Doctors have done the world's first partial skull and scalp transplant to help James Boysen who suffered a large head wound from cancer treatment. The 55-year-old said that he was stunned at how well doctors matched him to a donor with similar skin and hair colouring, News.com.au reported. The 15-hour operation was performed by around a dozen surgeons and 40 other medics on 22 May.

The surgery was thought to be the first skull-scalp transplant from a human donor, as opposed to an artificial implant or a simple bone graft. The software developer received the scalp and skull grafts at the same time as a kidney and pancreas transplant at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas. Boysen will remain in Houston for two to three weeks as his progress would be monitored. He would need to keep his head covered because sunlight increases the chance of rejection, his doctors said.
