Prime Minister Narendra Modi expands awareness on the ill effects of tobacco consumption on the occasion of 'World No Tobacco Day' through social networking site Twitter.
On Saturday pledged Modi tweeted, 'On World No Tobacco Day, lets pledge to spread awareness on the risks of tobacco consumption and work to reduce tobacco consumption in India.'
He further tweeted saying, 'Tobacco not only affects those consuming it but also people around. By saying no to tobacco, let us lay the foundation of a healthier India.'
Every six seconds, someone in the world dies from tobacco use, and approximately the sixth death occurs in India. India accounts roughly for 10 per cent of world's tobacco smokers. India is also the third largest producer of tobacco leaf in the world.
Here are some natural ways to quit smoking:
Substitute Herbal Cigarettes for Nicotine-Containing Ones
In the initial stages, it can be quite difficult to overcome your body's cravings for a smoke. The key to stick to your resolve to quit is to hold out against the impulse for a nicotine fix. Many Ayurvedic medical stores sell herbal cigarettes that are free from nicotine; these generally contain medicinal herbs such as turmeric, tulsi, cinnamon, gangal, mulethi, clove and guggul. Ayurveda prescribes the use of such medicinal smoking as an initial step to overcome the craving for nicotine.
Get Sufficient Exercise
It is well-known that exercise causes the release of mood-enhancing endorphins and this can help you deal with the feelings of melancholy that sometimes accompanies the effort to give up cigarettes. Set up a regular routine for exercise and stick to it.
Eat healthy
Quite a few people who quit smoking experience a peculiar bitter taste; changing the food you consume can help you adapt better to this. A vegetarian diet that is low in fat is the best when you first attempt to quit smoking. Increase your consumption of alkaline foods such as vegetables, fruits, dry nuts, sprouts, lima beans and raisins; cut down on the acidic content of your food by reducing foods such as bread, coffee, tea, dairy products and meat. Lack of nicotine can increase your appetite even as it slows down body metabolism and this means a tendency to gain weight. Avoid this by munching only on low-calorie foods such as raw fruits and vegetables when you feel hungry.
Get Help
Involve the people closest to you in your efforts to quit smoking. Tell your close family, friends and co-workers about your desire to quit. Their encouragement and support will be crucial to how well you succeed; besides, when you make this kind of a commitment, you feel more duty-bound to stick to your decision. If you think it necessary, ask for help from a psychologist who specializes in behavior therapy counseling to help you adopt the right attitude during the tough initial stages of quitting smoking.
