Today is World Mental Health Day and the theme is Workplace Wellness. We discussed issues related to mental health in the workplace with famous psychiatrist Dr Kersi Chavda from Hinduja Hospital. Here are a few tips for all of you who want to deal with the stress at your workplace, from the doctor:

  • Stress is prevalent everywhere and happens to almost everybody. However, it has various gradations that you must understand. One is good stress also known as eustress which is very useful for better performance and self-development. But if this is affecting you adversely, it then causes distress and leads to burnout, sleep deprivation and depressive episode.
  • If you're wondering when you should seek help, especially if you are in the high-pressure profession you should seek help when you feel that you no longer enjoy what you are doing, you've lost appetite, face lack of sleep, you are working too much or crying too much.
  • Too much stress could also lead to cigarette and alcohol addiction.
  • You should learn to say NO.
  • Sleep, exercise, diet, socialising (without cigarettes drugs alcohol) is very important.
  • If your work demands working late night you must make sure that you get enough sleep. Make a routine even if your work shift is at night.
  • If your stress is not affecting your personal life, professional life, functioning, physical, mental and emotional state you may not need a professional.
  • Yoga and meditation do help but nothing can replace medical help and professional help.
  • Don't shy away from professional help. Ther's nothing wrong in it.
  • For the teens- If you are doing badly in school doesn't mean that you'll not succeed in the future.
  • The first option should always be a face-to-face professional help.
  • Apps that claim to provide mental health aids may be a bit dicey. Choose smartly.
  • Food for mental health: Carbs overload all the time is not a good thing. However, what you should keep in mind is that even if you're not hungry you should eat at regular intervals, take small portions if you want because when you don't eat your blood sugar levels dip.
  • Nothing is a substitute for professional help.
  • Talking about low self-esteem the doctor says that EQ (Emotional Quotient) is more important than IQ (Intelligence Quotient) these days as it helps you cope with various problems in life. Be your own best friend and pat on your own shoulders once in a while. You must seek professional help too.
  • It is good to be a workaholic but an equal amount of balance in life is important. Recharge your batteries. Show some love to yourself.
  • If you are insecure about youngsters and our colleagues getting more appreciation at a workplace and it is affecting your personal life, you must seek a professional help.
  • Offer support to someone you feel needs medical help in a very warm manner. Don't be too intrusive and do it if your concerns are genuine.
