World Cancer Day 2025: Hyderabad Launches Free HPV Vaccination Drive
Taking into account World Cancer Day 2025 which is recognised globally on February 4, Apollo Cancer Centres have launched an initiative in Hyderabad to administer free HPV vaccines to prevent cervical cancer, on Monday. As part of this campaign, around 120 girls from orphanages received free vaccines on Monday. Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer affecting women. India is scheduled to roll out low-cost HPV vaccines soon in an attempt to prevent this disease.
The HPV vaccine has been made available for women at Apollo Cancer Centres, Jubilee Hills from 9 am to 6pm. The procedure is as follows: Beneficiaries must collect their coupons from the centre and take the first dose as per the allotted date and time. The procedure for the second dose also will be similar. According to news reports, the current cost of the vaccine ranges from Rs. 7000 to Rs. 8000. However, this makes it difficult for ordinary Indians to access the vaccine mainly due to its high cost. A study conducted on about 100 patients who are suffering from HPV-related disease revealed that 99 per cent of the people had cervical cancer already in the body. A health official from Apollo Cancer Centres told the media that in scenarios with such high prevalence of cancer, prevention is the best and only solution.
According to the data provided by experts on cervical cancer from 30 years ago, around 50 to 60 per cent of all cancer cases are cervical cancer. However, medical advancements and cancer awareness has a positive impact bringing the cancer prevalence down to 22 per cent and breast cancer prevalence now constitutes 30 per cent of the total cancer cases.
