Breastfeeding is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful experiences of a woman s life, but it comes with its own set of challenges. These include engorgement, mastitis, low milk supply, sore or cracked nipples, flat or inverted nipples, latch-on problems, the inability of the baby to gain weight, problems of feeding twins and triplets together, etc. Of these, cracked or sore nipples and low milk supply form an inevitable part of a mother s nursing journey. Here are four most common breastfeeding problems and their solutions.

The Medela Breastfeeding Survey 2017 shows that 20 percent of mothers suffered from low milk supply and 26 percent suffered from sore or cracked nipples while breastfeeding. These results highlight the common physical challenges which a new mother may encounter in her breastfeeding journey, but these problems can be resolved with the right guidance and treatment. Here are ways to improve breast milk supply during lactation.

Why it happens

Low milk supply: Insufficient lactation or low milk supply can be caused due to hormonal problems, medication, previous surgeries and jaundice among other reasons. However, sustained breastfeeding can lead to an improvement in milk generation owing to the demand-and-supply economics of milk production.

Nipple problems: Sore and cracked nipples are another common problem faced by mothers who breastfeed. These can be treated with simple remedies such as applying a cold pack, using medical-grade modified lanolin, applying an antibacterial ointment, massaging with oil or aloe vera and using hydrogel dressings. The mother can also nurse on the less injured side or guard their nipples with nipple shields to ease the pain. Here are five ways to heal cracked nipples due to breastfeeding.

Antenatal education or counselling in the second trimester and early intervention or help from a lactation consultant in case of postnatal challenges is the key to exclusive sustained breastfeeding, says Dr Anita Sharma(P.T.) IBCLC, IYCF, LCCE, Member of Medela LC Club.
