A heart attack is a serious medical emergency that occurs when the blood flow to the heart is interrupted due to any internal or external factors. In simple terms, the heart pumps oxygenated blood that is carried and transferred to the entire body and the organs - helping them to stay alive. When there is a problem like clogged arteries, the blood flow to the heart gets disrupted - which is when the cells within the heart start dying, eventually leading to death. But taking cognizance of the above case, let us understand the link between fasting and heart attack.
Speaking to TheHealthSite.com, Dr Spandana Chatterjee, Cardiologist, explains - Fasting is not just a practice, in India and many other parts of the world, it is considered a ritual that is associated with spiritual, religious, and health. From intermittent fasting to religious fasts like Durga Ashtami, Navratri, and Karwa Chauth, many believe that fasting is a healthy way to help the body get rid of toxins and improve overall well-being. However, for those with underlying health conditions, it can be an open invitation to death.
Dr Chatterjee says, "When you fast, your body undergoes several metabolic changes. The body first uses glucose (sugar) stored in the liver for energy. Once those reserves are depleted, it starts breaking down fat to produce energy. This can help regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels, but for some people, especially those with pre-existing heart issues, these shifts can put additional strain on the cardiovascular system."
Here is what happens inside the body when someone fasts for a longer period:
