Post the nurses going on strikes in various states, Kerala has finally responded with a committtee studying the conditions under which these nurses work.

The Balaraman committee has recommended the following to the Health Minister of Kerala V S Sivakumar:

  • A threefold increase in salary especially for the senior nurses (they were getting paid as low as Rs 4000-Rs 5000).
  • Bonded service to be abolished.
  • Working hours of the nurses should be limited to not more than 48 hours a week (they work upto 18-20 hours at a stretch presently).
  • A three-shift system needs to be introduced.
  • Similar uniforms for all nurses across hospitals.
  • Increase support staff, which would in turn reduce the burden on the nurses.

What's now to be seen is if the health Mininster accepts and implements these recommendations. And if Kerala sets an example for other states to follow suit in making the nurses' lives better.
