There's nothing that a little bit of determination cannot do, and 25-year old Beno Zephine who was inducted into the India Foreign Service (IFS) last Friday just proved it. What's so special about her is the fact that Beno is the first 100% visually challenged person to be inducted into the IFS.

The IFS did not have provisions for the blind with a few exceptions for candidates with low vision, Beno is thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking this big decision as reported in the Times Of India. Beno had cleared her civil services exam last year but was still to receive her posting. Beno is now looking forward to her assignment and is excited about the fact that as a diplomat she will have many opportunities to speak as she likes talking a lot. It was also reported that Beno, a postgraduate in English from Madras University was active throughout her school in various debates and extempore competitions.

Beno switched from Braille and used a software called Job Access With Speech (JAWS) that helped her achieve her goals. The software that can also be adapted to a smartphone allows the visually challenged to read from a computer screen and scans English and Tamil books.
