Among the half million people who commit suicide every year around the world, more than 20% are Indians. Furthermore, the suicide rates are high in the southern states as compared to the northern parts of the country. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), family problems and illness are reported to be the major causes of suicides that accounts for 25.6% and 20.8% of the deaths respectively. In addition to these, other key reasons of suicidal deaths in India are drug addiction or abuse, love affairs, financial problems and dowry issues.

The common cause of suicides that showed an increase in the rate of suicides in the last three years is drug abuse or addiction. Whereas, fall in social reputation, property issues and failing in exams has shown a decrease in the suicidal rates for the past few years. Apart from these, various reasons that have shown mixed percentage rates in triggering an individual to take this drastic step include -

  • Sudden financial loss (bankruptcy)
  • Marriage issues (dowry dispute, cancellation of marriages or divorce)
  • Job problems (unemployment or stress-related to profession or career )
  • Medical factors ( reaction of drugs, impotency, etc.)
  • Family problems (love affairs, illegitimate pregnancy, poverty, etc)

Although there are many factors that force an individual to take this drastic step of suicide, knowing about the warning signs might help in lowering the death rates. Here are three key signs to look out -

  • Mostly talking about harming or killing oneself
  • Writing a lot about death or dying
  • Seeking out weapons and drugs that could help in a suicide attempt

These signals are more indicative in an individual who suffers from depression or bipolar disorder, alcohol dependence or has previously tried t0 commit suicide.

Role of society and family in lowering suicidal deaths

GoravGupta, Director and psychiatrist, Tulasi Healthcare (Rehabilitation Centre) says, 'In most cases, suicidal individuals give warning signs or signals. This is the best way to recognize their intentions and prevent them from taking their lives.' If you find any of your close relative, family member or friend with suicidal tendencies, know how to respond. You can either talk with them (don't argue and try to keep yourself calm) about other alternatives, tell them about how much you care or love them and try to consult a psychologist or a doctor at the earliest.

Society also plays a key role in preventing as well as lowering suicidal death rates by spreading awareness about mental health issues. Other community measures that might help, include suicide prevention help lines, developing support groups and appointing mental health workers or by scheduling regular visits by healthcare professionals.
