The World Health Organisation has issued a serious alert regarding three cough syrup manufacturing in India that were responsible for the death of children in Madhya Pradesh. This shocking word has sent waves across the country, alerting health authorities to take urgent action to prevent major crises. These cough syrups have been found to contain diethylene glycol, which is a very toxic chemical that can cause kidney failure and even death, especially in young kids. Parents and caregivers are being informed to check medicines very carefully before giving them to their child and to avoid giving cough syrup to children.

Children Die From Cough Syrup In Madhya Pradesh

In Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, at least 22 children below the age of 5 years died after having the harmful cough syrup. most of them used to belong form Parasia and a lot of them are getting treatment in the hospitals in Nagpur Maharastra. According to the lab test these cough syrup contains DEG at nearly 500 times the safe limit, which make them very dangerous for people.

Are These Cough Syrup Exported

The Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) have confirm that none of the contaminated batches have been exported. The US foods and drug administration has also confirmed that these toxic syrups had not be shipped to United States. While the immediate crisis is limited to India, authorities are on high alert so that they can protect the future export of unsafe medicines.

  • Other drugs, manufacturing companies are undergoing detailed inspection to maintain the safety.
  • In some states, some specific cough syrup are banned and children under 2 years of age are not allowed to take any cough, syrup or medicine for cold.

Investigation And Arrest

The owner of sresan pharmaceuticals, G ranganathan has been arrested by special investigation team of Madhya Pradesh. The enforcement directorate also raided the company in connection with prevention of money laundering act case. Tamil Nadu government has made announcement that other detailed inspection will be conducted for pharmaceutical companies so that such incident does not happen in future.
