West Bengal Election 2026: In a landmark political shift in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears poised for a decisive victory in the Assembly Elections 2026, based on early trends and counting patterns. If these numbers hold, the party is likely to form the government in the state for the first time, replacing the current government, Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee.
As saffron celebrations begin across the state, let's take a quick look at what Prime Minister Narendra Modi made all promises during the campaign - particularly those focused on healthcare and women's security in the state from April 5.
Addressing an election rally in Bishnupur in Bankura district, Modi said that if a BJP government comes to power in the state, women would be entitled to free medical treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh. He also promised free dialysis in government hospitals for families affected by kidney disease. Let us understand what he actually said and what this healthcare move means for all the women in the state.

BJP Wins Big In West Bengal: PM Modi Promises Free Healthcare for Women
Highlighting financial support measures, the Prime Minister, during his campaign rally ahead of the election, had said that women in the state would receive Rs 36,000 annually, while pregnant women would be given Rs 21,000. He added that new mothers would get Rs 5,000 from the Centre for their daughters' education, along with an additional Rs 50,000 assistance. Under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, he said, women would be eligible for loans of up to Rs 20 lakh for self-employment, and those engaged in agriculture would receive an extra Rs 9,000 each year.
Modi accused the Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of failing women by opposing the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aimed to provide 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
The bill could not be passed in the Lok Sabha on Friday as it fell short of the required two-thirds majority, despite receiving 298 votes in favour and 230 against, against the required 352 votes.

What PM Modi's Free Dialysis, 5 Lakh Health Cover Promise Means Now
Among the most talked-about commitments are free dialysis services and a 5 lakh health insurance cover for women, both of which could significantly reshape access to medical care in the state.
Free Dialysis Services is aimed at patients suffering from chronic kidney disease, especially those from low-income backgrounds who struggle with the recurring cost of dialysis.
5 Lakh Health Cover for Women: A financial protection scheme intended to cover hospitalisation and major treatments, reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.
These promises were positioned as part of a broader push to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and expand insurance coverage.
What Is Dialysis And Why Does It Matter?
Dialysis is a life-saving but expensive treatment required multiple times a week for patients with kidney failure. In India, the cost of one session can range from 1,500 to 3,000 in private facilities, making long-term treatment unaffordable for many.
As promised by PM Modi, women in West Bengal will be given free dialysis by the government when BJP comes into the power, here is what one can expect if this happens:
This step will reduce the healthcare financial burden on families
Free dialysis for women will also help improve survival and quality of life for kidney patients
A good healthcare plan will also help expand access in rural and underserved areas
Overall, if this move is being implemented it could also build on existing central schemes like the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme, but with expanded reach at the state level.
