BreakfastHaving a baby, can be one of the most exceptional experiences for a woman. However, if for some reason a woman is not able to be pregnant – she faces wrath of society, a loss of confidence besides the guilt of never being able to be a mother. There are many reasons for decreasing fertility levels – a sedentary lifestyle, increased smoking and drinking, a fast food culture, later pregnancies and much more. However, there are ways you can counter the infertility demon and one way is eating a hearty and healthy breakfast. A new study has revealed that eating more calories in the morning breakfast can have a positive impact on women with problems of infertility. Research, conducted by Prof Oren Froy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Prof Daniela Jocabovitz and Dr. Julio Weinstein from Tel Aviv University and Wolfson Medical Center, showed that a big breakfast increases fertility among woman who suffer from menstrual irregularities. The study examined whether meal times have an impact on the health of woman with menstrual irregularities due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The experiment was carried out at Wolfson Medical Center on 60 women over a 12-week period.

The women were divided into two groups and were allowed to consume about 1,800 calories a day. The difference between the groups was the timing of their largest meal. One group consumed their largest meal, approximately 980 calories, at breakfast, while the other at dinner.

The findings showed improved results for the group that consumed a big breakfast. Glucose levels and insulin resistance decreased by 8 percent, while the second group (‘dinner’) showed no changes.

Another finding showed that among the ‘breakfast’ group, testosterone levels decreased by nearly 50 percent, while the ‘dinner’ group level stayed neutral. In addition, there was a much higher rate of ovulating woman within the ‘breakfast group’ compared to the ‘dinner’ group, showing that eating a hearty breakfast leads to an increase in the level of fertility among woman with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

The study is published in journal Clinical Science.

Here are some healthy Indian breakfast options that you can try:

Soya

Soya is an excellent source of protein. Almost 35 per cent of its calories come from protein. If you are a vegetarian then do include this in your meals. It is also a good source for fibre and minerals. It can lower cholesterol levels as it has isoflavones thus improving heart health. A quick and easy-to-make recipe using soya is soya dosa. It is healthy with a twist to the usual dosa.

Nachni

Also called ragi, nachni has a number of health benefits and it does not have much fat. If you are on a weight loss diet then this is a good option for you. Nachni is also a great source of iron and fibre. People suffering from diabetes can also benefit from eating dishes containing nachni. Try making nachni pancakes for breakfast.

Sprouts

Sprouts are relatively easy to make. All you need to do is take a handful of pulses and soak them overnight. Drain them and put them in a muslin cloth and leave it for a few hours (preferably 8 hrs). It takes time but not much effort is needed. Once the sprouts are ready, you can add chopped onions and tomatoes and eat them or try making poha with mixed sprouts. Sprouts are loaded with benefits. They are a rich source of minerals and essential vitamins and since they are raw, they do not lose any of their plant nutrients. (Read more: Healthy Indian breakfast ideas)
