For the uninitiated, eczema is a chronic condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked. It is a very common inflammatory skin condition where the skin barrier function is impaired or weakened, making the sky dry out and become more vulnerable to bacterial or viral infections.
In a study done on mice and on human cells have now found that bee venom and melittin, one of its major components, suppresses the inflammation of the skin by targeting the immune cells.
This study demonstrated that bee venom and melittin have immunomodulatory activity, and such activity was associated with the regulation of T helper cell differentiation, thereby ameliorating the inflammatory skin diseases caused by atopic dermatitis, the authors said in a release. The study was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.
The Health and Safe Executive estimated that about one in five children have eczema, with most of them developing it before their first birthday. The HSE is the body responsible for encouragement, regulation and enforcement of health, safety and welfare at workplace. It also felicitates research into occupational risk in Britain.
The study found that in about 53 per cent of the atopic eczema cases, the infection clears up by the time a child reaches 11 years old. In 65 per cent of cases, it clears up by the time the child reaches 16.
The number of people diagnosed with atopic eczema has increased in recent years. This could be due to changes in lifestyle or environmental factors that cause eczema, or because healthcare professionals are now more aware of the symptoms, the HSE said in the release.
