The Financial Express reported a study published in the journal Respiratory Research which revealed the good and the bad side of vitamin E. The study suggests that a form of vitamin E found in corn and canola oil may be bad for lung function, while another form typically found in olive oil may be protective for the lungs.
Vitamin E is available to us from fats and oils in the form of tocopherols. But vitamin E supplements may either contain a single type of tocopherol, or other forms as well. According to the study, vitamin called gamma tocopherol that is found in corn, canola and soybean oils is linked to poor lung function in adults. But another form that is found in olive and sunflower oils, called alpha tocopherol seemed to have a beneficial effect on lungs. (Read: Top 5 food sources of vitamin E)
The report highlights that consumers who take vitamin E supplements and doctors who recommend it should be more aware about the source and formulation of the vitamin. The research cautions Vitamin E use and also highlights the need for rigorous studies to determine whether alpha tocopherol in supplements or food can directly improve lung function, or if gamma tocopherol would have the opposite effect.
