Cardiac Arrest While Sleeping: Understanding The Warning Signs and Causes

Cardiac arrest is a sudden fatal health condition wherein there is an unexpected loss of heart function. This can happen to anybody irrespective of age and gender. However, the risk of experiencing this condition increases with age. Men over 40 are particularly susceptible to cardiac arrest due to several factors:

  1. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): One of the most common causes of cardiac arrest is this condition called CAD. Characterized by the buildup of plaque in the heart's arteries, it can block the blood flow and lead to death.
  2. High Blood Pressure: Make sure that your body is safe from the effects of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. High blood pressure can put extreme pressure on the heart and increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
  3. High Cholesterol: High levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol can contribute to serious heart health issues, including the development of CAD.
  4. Obesity: Excess weight can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other health problems that increase the risk of cardiac arrest.
  5. Stress: Make sure to keep a close check on your stress levels. Excessive stress can contribute to serious heart problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Symptoms of Cardiac Arrest

Although cardiac arrests are sudden and mostly silent, there are some abnormalities that your body may show up when you are at risk, these include:

  1. Sudden collapse
  2. Chest pain and discomfort
  3. Loss of consciousness
  4. Shortness of breath
  5. Nausea and vomiting
