It sounds weird, but yes Viagra could be a new magical cure for blindness. According to the scientists at Columbia University in New York, the little anti-impotence drug could stop AMD (Age-related macular degeneration), in its tracks. During the research, 5 elderly patients with AMD were given two Viagra pills a day for two years.

According to the Deccan Chronicle report, the tests show that the blue pill could even repair the damage that's already been done and it may stop further loss of vision for patients being robbed of their sight. A study published in the journal Ophthalmologica, showed that the drug completely halted deterioration for the others and improved vision for one participant.

Dry AMD is the UK's leading cause of blindness, with about 600,000 Britons already thought to have suffered some loss of vision as a result of it. This disease on slowly over several years. On the other hand, wet AMD can cause blindness within less than three months.

Usually, after the age of fifty, dry AMD develops and it is caused by the growth of new blood vessels over the macula, a small oval-shaped area at the back of the eye that helps us pick out visual details clearly. These blood vessels leak fluid, causing scar tissue to form and destroying vision in the centre of the eye making it difficult to recognise faces, read or watch television. Recent research has suggested that suggested Viagra can improve blood flow to this tissue.

However, the researchers said that Viagra offers significant potential for vision retention and recovery. After the intake of this drug, the patients remained visually stable and there was a significant improvement in vision in one participant.
