Veteran Nuclear Scientist And Architect Of India's Nuclear Programme, R Chidambaram, Passes Away At 88
Distinguished nuclear scientist Dr R Chidambaram - who was one of the key architects on India's nuclear progress and played a role in the Pokhran-I and Pokhran-II nuclear tests, passed away on Saturday. According to news reports, he had been in poor health for some time. Dr. Chidambaram is very well known all over the world for his many contributions. He worked as the Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and Secretary of the Department. He passed away at age 88.
Rajagopala Chidambaram was the head of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. He was also one of the key architects of India's nuclear programmes and played one of the major roles in the nuclear tests that India conducted in the year 1974 and 1998. He was also involved in the civil nuclear agreement with the United States and played a key role in its finalisation. This nuclear deal with the US later ended India's isolation in the international community and affirmed our country's role as a potential nuclear power.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tweeted on X, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Dr. Rajagopala Chidambaram. He was one of the key architects of India's nuclear programme and made ground-breaking contributions in strengthening India's scientific and strategic capabilities. He will be remembered with gratitude by the whole nation and his efforts will inspire generations to come."
