A lot of people get confused with cardiac arrest and heart attacks. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) a cardiac arrest is caused by blocked arteries in the heart. Some of the common symptoms of cardiac arrest include shortness of breath, extreme tiredness, back pain, flu-like symptoms, belly pain, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, mainly angina, repeated dizziness, and heart palpitations.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that around 356,000 people experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States every year and about 60% to80% often die before reaching the hospital.
"The main cause of cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, which are types of arrhythmias. Important risk factors include prior cardiac arrest, coronary heart disease, heart valve disease, congenital heart defects, and arrhythmias caused by faulty genes . However, half of cardiac arrests happen to people who did not know they had a heart problem," the CDC states.
Cases of cardiac arrest are very common in older adults and men. The US health agency further claimed that people who survived cardiac arrest often suffer from brain injury, damage to internal organs, psychological distress, like anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression.
The best way to prevent heart disease, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), is to choose the right foods that are low in unhealthy fat and sodium. It encourages to eat plenty of vegetables, fibre-rich whole grains and fish. Other precaution measures include moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for minimum of 150 minutes. The AHA further explained that not everyone experiences symptoms of cardiac arrest. Therefore, the best way to prevent cardiac arrest is learning the signs and symptoms of heart disease. Most importantly, limit sugar-sweetened beverages and red meat. The US heart health agency states, "If you choose to eat meat, select the leanest cuts available."
