According to a study published in the journal Gastroenterology promoting healthy microbes colonising the gut can treat or prevent metabolic disorders like diabetes and heart disease. A person with metabolic syndrome is twice as likely to develop heart disease and five times as likely to develop diabetes. The study was actually a follow up study by researchers at Georgia State University and Cornell University published in journal Science. The previous study showed that altered gut microbes plays a role in promoting metabolic syndrome. In this particular study the researchers used an improved technical approach to make the results more significant.
