Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps who was reportedly charged for driving under the influence of alcohol, has been suspended for the next six months from USA Swimming-sanctioned competition after his arrest in Baltimore last week. The decision was announced Monday.
Apart from USA Swimming, Phelps has also been suspended from the 2015 FINA World Championships team. According to Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming, Michael's conduct was serious and necessitated immediate action.
He was driving 40 miles/hour over the allowed speed limit, reportedly 84 mph in a zone of 45 mph. His blood alcohol content (BAC) measured twice the allowed limit of consumption. He was unable to perform satisfactorily for a series of sobriety tests. He was also charged for crossing double lanes.
This is not the first time Phelps has been charged. In 2004 and 2009, he had been arrested before on similar charges and had been suspended from USA Swimming for a brief period of time. Sunday he tweeted that he would join a program 'that will provide the help I need to better understand myself.' He earlier tweeted an apology for his conduct and taking responsibility for his actions.
