USA Confirms First Case Of H5N1 Bird Flu Transmission In A Child
USA records the first-ever case of H5N1 influenza or bird flu virus transmission in a child from California, reported the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). The child who tested positive for avian influenza reportedly experienced milk flue symptoms and was also administered with flu and anti-viral medications.
CDC reports that the initial specimen showed indications of low levels of viral material. They conducted a follow-up test where the result was negative for H5 bird flu but positive for other respiratory viruses which are very common.
As per reports, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) also conducted tests on each family member. However, all of them tested negative for H5 influenza. Some of the family members were however positive for the common respiratory viruses that the child also tested positive with. CDC concludes that there is no evidence of a person-to-person transmission in the country.
