In a very unusual incident in the central-southern town of France, a swarm of bees suddenly attacked passersby, leaving three in critical condition and 24 others injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning when passersby were stung for a straight 3o minutes.
Local media reported that one of the injured was a 78-year-old woman who was stung 25 times and had to be resuscitated after a cardiorespiratory arrest.
"I could tell they were being attacked by something, but I couldn't figure out what," says one witness.
The person in charge of the local fire service, Lt Col Michel Cayla, who has never experienced such an attack, tells local media, "In terms of the number of victims, the panic among the people and the severity of some of the injuries, it was striking."
Pierre Mathonier, the mayor of Aurillac, Pierre Mathonier, was reported as saying that the incident may have been related to the Asian hornet threatening a beehive, which was installed over the rooftops of a hotel more than a decade ago.
The Mayor also announced that the beehive has now been removed from the hotel and relocated to another location outside of the town.
