In a country like India where malnutrition is one of the major problems we need to tackle, The Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee says he wants to address it as one of the top things to tackle this budget.
According to the World Bank, India stands second only after Bangladesh in terms of malnourished kids where 47% show some degree of malnutrition. The prevalence of underweight children in India is among the highest in the world, higher than Sub-saharan regions of Africa. We await details on what FM plans to do to tackle this looming problem.
A report by UNICEF on Malnutrition quoted - "Malnutrition is associated with about half of all child deaths worldwide. Malnourished children have lowered resistance to infection; they are more likely to die from common childhood ailments like diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections; and for those who survive, frequent illness saps their nutritional status, locking them into a vicious cycle of recurring sickness, faltering growth and diminished learning ability".
