Unilever's health soap, Lifebuoy has set out to end preventable death of children under five years by teaching people to change handwashing behaviour across 17 countries.
'Help a Child Reach 5' campaign was launched in 2013 in Thesgora village of Madhya Pradesh which has the highest rate of diarrhoea in India and is now expanding to 17 countries.
'We know handwashing with soap is one of the most effective and low-cost ways to prevent diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea, responsible for death of 2 million children under five years of age. In the past few years, we have taught 130 million people healthy handwashing habits for life and integrated this into our business model,' said Samir Singh, Libebuoy global brand vice president.
The brand ambassador of Lifebuoy and actor Kajol also attended the United Nations General Assembly Week and spoke to world leaders and policy makers about the importance of handwashing with soap as a critical policy to be implemented in the post-2015 development agenda. Steps to wash hands properly
First wet your hands till the center of the forearm. Apply soap or handwash on your hands.
STEP 1:
Rub your palms together to get a good lather.
STEP 2:
Rub the back of both hands by placing your right palm on the back of the left hand, and interlacing outstretched fingers. Alternate the hands and repeat the process. This process ensures that the area between the fingers are properly cleaned.
STEP 3:
Place your palms together and interlace your fingers. Rub your hands together to clean your palms and fingers properly.
STEP 4:
Now bend the fingers of both hands and interlock them with the palms facing each other. Move the finger tips in opposite directions to clean.
STEP 5:
Clasp the thumb of one hand with the fingers of the other hand. Now rotate the fingers in a clockwise and anticlockwise fashion around the thumb. Repeat the process for the thumb of the other hand.
STEP 6:
Bring the fingers together of one hand over the palm to form a sort of an apex. Place this on the palm of the opposite hand and rub in a circular motion. Repeat the process for the other hand.
STEP 7:
Now clean the wrists of both hands by clasping one hand over the wrist of the other and rubbing in a clockwise and anticlockwise fashion.
Rinse off the soap and wash hands well with clean water. Do not touch the tap head with your clean hands use a tissue to hold the faucet and turn off the water. Wipe your hands dry with the help of disposable tissue, or your own handkerchief. Do not use common towels or touch door handles in the bathroom as they can recontaminate your hands.
