Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that his ministry favours setting up separate departments in top medical colleges to treat psychiatry related diseases. He said the demand to set up regional centres of National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) in separate states was unfeasible because of the high costs involved.
"We can plan setting up of separate departments for mental health in top medical colleges in each state, and government will provide funds for equipment, medicine in these departments and also increase the number of seats in NIMHANS to train more doctors and nurses from these colleges", he said, speaking after inaugurating new infrastructure facilities at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences in Bangalore. The minister also inaugurated e-hospital services, expanded sewage treatment plant, a hostel complex and dining hall of NIMHANS.
