The Uber rape case in Delhi has clearly highlighted that women are not at all safe in the capital city. After protests against Uber cab service and the decision to ban the company from Delhi, question regarding women safety are mounting with every passing day. Addressing the urgent need of women's security and safety while travelling, Bengaluru-based Ola cabs will soon be launching a cab service 'by women, for women'. The service will employ only women drivers and will exclusively be run for women passengers in the city. Currently Ola cabs have about 50-100 women drivers to start the service but in order to scale up the service they will need more number of female drivers, for which they have initiated discussions with a few non-profit organisations. The service is also ensuring provision of GPS devices in the cabs as well as a thorough verification for drivers employed at the company. Here are some ways women can guard themselves
Be aware
Lack of awareness makes one prone to such dangers. This also means that in case you are heading to a place you are unsure of or is isolated then keep some important numbers saved or on your speed dial. Save the women s helpline service, your area police station numbers. Importantly don t go alone!
Show no fear
Confidence, and some self-defense could come in handy. Besides, be ready to raise your voice and react without any fear. It s important that you try and not give into the shock during that moment, and retaliate immediately.
