Cancer-Causing Chemicals: Women have been unknowingly increasing their chances of developing cancer under the guise of their pseudo-self-care experience, which is silently pushing them towards developing cancer. Many of the self-care, skincare and beauty products like shampoos, moisturizers, hair-setting sprays and creams include chemicals that promote cancer. A new study published in the Environmental Science & Technology Letters on May 7, 2025, reveals the dangerous link between beauty products and increased cancer risk.

Cancer-Causing Chemicals in Beauty Products: What the Study Found

The study was based on women's daily use of beauty and self-care products that were found to contain a known carcinogen. The women who participated were asked to photograph the ingredient lists of all the products they used at home over a week.

Out of the G4 women, research scientists discovered that 53% reported using soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, skin lightener, eyeliner, eyelash glue, mascara and other beauty and self-care products that contain formaldehyde and preservatives that release formaldehyde, which are toxins that can cause cancer in human beings.

Formaldehyde is a great preservative," she said. "That's why it's used as an embalming fluid. And we do have to remember that formaldehyde, which is a preservative used in beauty products that helps them last longer than usual, is a carcinogen and can effectively cause cancer. The study revealed that despite its negative repercussions, formaldehyde is still used in a large amount of beauty- -self-care products like shampoos, skin-brightening creams, mascara and eyeliners. The apathy of the people is a major concern as it reflects a striking irony about how people are neglecting their body's well-being in the name of Self-care.

Hidden Dangers in Daily Routine: The Frequency of Exposure

The research has found that black and Latin women are more exposed to formaldehyde through beauty products than white women. That puts them in an even more vulnerable place on the list. The research further included that this chemical is more prevalent in hair products like hair dyes and chemical hair straighteners. The conclusion could substantially give a reason as to why breast, uterine and ovarian cancers kill disproportionately more Black than white women.

A recent study shows that formaldehyde and products that release formaldehyde are not only present in hair relaxers but in a wide range of other beauty products, including many that women apply to their bodies far more frequently than chemical hair straighteners.

The women were made to use 1,143 over seven days and the G4 participants used struck Tracey Woodruff, who directs the University of California at San Francisco's Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment. The women had to use an estimate of 17 different products a day as few as 5 and as many as 43. The research and experiment don't only reflect the loopholes of the makeup and beauty industry but also throw light on the pressure that women face to look a certain way and be the right amount of presentable and beautiful.
