Tobacco-Style Cancer Warning Labels To Be Displayed On Alcohol Bottles Across Europe: WHO Report
A recent finding by the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that alcohol consumption has caused 800,000 deaths across Europe each year. According to the new report released also states that majority of the people are not aware of the severe repercussions of alcohol consumption and its link to cancer. The WHO called for clear and prominent tobacco-style warnings in the continent. Europe is said to have the heaviest alcohol drinkers in the world.
The new survey states that, just 15 per cent of respondents were aware that alcohol causes breast cancer and only 39 per cent were aware of the link between alcohol and colon cancer.
The WHO said, "Despite cancer being the leading cause of alcohol-attributable deaths in the European Union (EU), public awareness of the link between alcohol and cancer remains alarmingly low."
The global health agency has announced that they will issue a string and cleat 2arning through labeling. They said, "Relying on self-regulation, as the industry would prefer, brings the risk that a producers use inconspicuous placement and ambiguous messaging" or use QR codes which are typically ignored by shoppers."
The WHO stated that from now on alcoholic drinks will display a clear and prominent health warning in a written format. This will also be combined with pictures to maximize reach. This is a attempt to empower consumers with clear and accurate information so that they can make informed decisions regarding their health.
