Antibiotic resistance has become a big concern with its unsolicited use. Experts have been urging people to limit their antibiotic use to safeguard their health in the future. Apart from this, overuse of antibiotics can also destroy gut bacteria worsening certain conditions, damaging the health. Amidst the scare of antibiotic resistance, a promising study seems to have found a way to reduce antibiotic resistance, all you need to do is gorge on cranberries.
How do cranberries reduce antibiotic resistance?
Experts at the International Conference on Polyphenols and Health said that cranberries had the potential to reduce antibiotic resistance and oxidative stress. The experts also presented evidence on how cranberries can help curb recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), the second most common type of infection in the body. If the number of infections is reduced, the use of antibiotics will also be reduced which would reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. The scientists explained that cranberries contain a unique blend of polyphenols that may help in preserving heart health, cognitive health and also offer protection against oxidative stress to help promote overall well-being.
Kalpana Gupta from the University of Boston said that research had already showed how cranberries prevent UTIs but these recent findings revealed how cranberries had a plethora of benefits. Drinking cranberry juice cocktail may also help manage risks associated with heart disease, diabetes and stroke. (Read: Do these new anti biotics hold the key to antibiotic resistance)
