Having bought my first pair of heels at the age of twenty-five, I never really understood the obsession with high heels. While I can happily run around my office in my comfortable sneakers because I have the luxury to, there are many women who simply can't. The whole hospitality industry, be it front desk executives in hotels or servers in restaurants, it is mandatory for most women in these professions to wear high heels. Models and actresses who are criticised at every wrong shoe choice are also compelled to wear high heels irrespective of whether their feet are killing them.

Recently, a Facebook post has been doing rounds where Nicola Gavins from Canada posted a picture of her friend's blood soaked socks and shoes. The post says that her friend is required to wear high heels as a part of her server's uniform. The restaurant where she works has made it mandatory for all the female staff to wear heels unless they are medically restricted. Even after she was bleeding and lost a toenail, her manager did not allow her to change into flats. Her friend was also told that she'd be required to wear heels to the next shift as well.
