Third Wave of Covid-19 Will Be Bigger Than Second In Maharashtra
World Health Organisation announced the arrival of the third wave of Covid-19 recently. The announcement that the 3rd wave may hit India somewhere between August and October has left everyone alarmed. It has been reported that the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, first reported in India, will be the dominant variant in the third wave. As per the Union Health Ministry, WHO's warning is a red signal for India as the fall in the Covid cases in the country has slowed down.
While the pandemic that plagued the whole world slowed down in the past months, but the situation in some places remain worrisome, including some districts in Maharashtra, Kerala and the Northeast. In fact, Maharashtra's public health minister Rajesh Tope on Sunday expressed fear that the predicted third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic would infect around 60 lakh people across the state.
As Covid-19 cases in Kolhapur, the state's current hotspot, increased again on Sunday, Maharashtra public health minister Rajesh Tope warned that the approaching third wave might be greater than the second, with 60 lakh people infected. This, in turn, would increase the requirement of medical oxygen from 2,000MT to 4,000 MT, said Tope. He further stated that people should continue to take necessary precautions: crowding should be avoided, no permissions should be given for public functions. The first wave hit 20 lakh, the second wave affected 40 lakh, experts fear that the third wave might affect 60 lakh people.
In a statement, Niti Aayog health member VK Paul said while the present situation in the country is under control, India is far from reaching herd immunity. Hence, the next months will be very crucial and the risk remains high. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, the third wave may hit the nation around August-end, but the wave might be less intense than the second wave of coronavirus.
In a recent statement, AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria recommended a few measures that people should take in order to alleviate the severe effects of coronavirus in people.
On Sunday, Maharashtra registered 9,000 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 6,149,264. The number of active cases has risen to 103,486. In the last 24 hours, the state recorded 5,756 recoveries and 180 casualties, bringing the total to 127,031. Satara had the most fatalities, with 32, followed by Pimpri-Chinchwad, which had 20. Covid 19 daily cases have not been resolved in the last month, causing alarm among state officials. According to experts, the local administration would have to act in mission mode to assure a decrease in instances.
