Thailand Battles Severe Floods: At least 33 people have died in Southern Thailand as severe flooding continues to sweep across 10 provinces, a senior government official said on Wednesday. To curb the devastating situation in Thailand, the government has put the armed forces in charge of the relief operation and prepared a very large-scale evacuation.

Talking to the media, Siripong Angkasakulkiat, government spokesperson, revealed that the causes of deaths associated with the flood are due to landslides and electrocution.

Thailand Flood Extended To Malaysia

According to reports, the recent flooding is among the worst to hit the region in years with water levels as high as two metres in certain districts. What is even more concerning is that the crisis has also extended across the border into Malaysia, where 8 of its states have been inundated after days of severe monsoon rainfall.

Rescue Operations Underway

Thailand's military flew into the flood-prone zones area by C-130 transport aircraft which carried medicine, food and drinking water. The navy said that it is dispatching 14 boats and the aircraft carrier Chakri Narubet, which will carry two helicopters, doctors and kitchen staples that can produce 3000 meals a day. The military confirmed in a statement, "The fleet is ready to deliver forces and carry out actions as the Royal Navy orders."

Safety Tips To Stay Protected In Flood Emergency

To protect yourself and loved ones during a flood emergency, it is crucial to follow these expert tips outlined by Julie Munger, co-founder of Seirre Rescue and David Markenson, Director of Centres for Disaster Medicine:

  • Plan and evacuate early: When you're dealing flood, planning as early as possible is very important. Ensure to rush towards the highest point and not be concerned about your possessions.
  • Go to the roof, not attic: Julie Munger told a leading media outlet that if you're in the house when the flood occurs, try to get to the highest storey building possible without getting trapped in an attic. Ensure to grab a communication device and not possessions.
  • Treat windows with caution: Use a hammer or other hard objects to break open windows.
  • Turn around, don't get drowned: If you're caught in a car during a flood, Julie Munger states that ideally, you'd roll down the window, so that it becomes more like a rock. Later, get up on top of the roof.
