Height And Cancer Risk: In a recent study, the World Cancer Research Fund has stated that there is strong evidence taller people have a higher chance of developing cancer compared to short-heighted ones.

The UK Million Women Study found that for 15 of the 17 cancers they investigated, the taller you are the more likely you are to have them. It found that overall, each ten-centimetre increase in height increased the risk of developing cancer by about 16 per cent. A similar increase has been found in men.

A list of these cancers was also added to the paper. Some of them include:

  1. Pancreas
  2. Large bowel
  3. Uterus (endometrium)
  4. Ovary
  5. Prostate
  6. Kidney
  7. Skin (melanoma) and
  8. Breast (pre- and post-menopausal)

While the exact mechanisms underlying this relationship are still being investigated, several potential factors may contribute to the observed association.

These hormones can promote cell growth and proliferation, potentially increasing the risk of cancer.

Genetic factors may also play a role. Certain genetic variations that contribute to taller stature may also increase the risk of developing certain cancers. Additionally, nutritional factors and lifestyle behaviours could influence the relationship between height and cancer risk.
