The Park Street rape victim, Suzette Jordan, 40, died today at a hospital in Kolkata due to multiple organ failure. She was hospitalised for three days and suffered from meningoencephalitis.
A nationwide outrage was created in February 2012, when she was brutally raped in a moving car on Park Street in Kolkata. She took on the government head-on to fight for justice when her case was rendered fabricated. Suzette also appeared on Aamir Khan's popular TV show 'Satyamev Jayate' in Season 2 and spoke about violence against women. She fought her legal battle for justice bravely but only three of the accused are behind bars while the prime accused is still at large. Her life after rape and the legal battle was a heart-wrenching story like that of every rape victim. She was denied employment by many after she spoke up about her rape. But her story is very inspiring as she did not give up and started working as a rape counsellor for a website. (Read: What you should know about the post-sexual assault medical procedure)
While we wish that her story inspires everyone to stand up against violence and fight for justice, we also pray her soul rests in peace.
