External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj was hospitalised at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday after she complained of chest pain. At AIIMS she underwent a few tests and was steadily recovering. According to recent reports, Sushma Swaraj, 64, was suffering from pneumonia and chest congestion and was also running a fever. Her condition is now stable and she's recovering.
Chest pain is a sign of many diseases and conditions. However, we most commonly associate it with heart attacks and acidity and many times one is confused for the other. The major distinguishing factors for the two conditions are the symptoms accompanying chest pain. While bloating is a common sign of acidity, if you experience it in the early hours of the morning it might signify a heart attack. Apart from acidity and heart attacks, chest pain can also indicate a few other conditions. GERD also causes chest pain but it is not associated with exertion or physical activity. Pulmonary hypertension which means an increased blood pressure in the arteries that blood to the lungs can also cause chest pain. Other lung disorders like pulmonary embolism and inflammation of the lungs and collapsed lungs can also cause pain in the chest. In pulmonary embolism, a blood clot develops in an artery in the lung and it blocks the flow of blood to the lung tissue.
Stress, anxiety, depression and panic attacks also cause chest pain. Stress leads to an increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure and rapid breathing which affects the blood flow to the heart causing chest pain. Read more about other causes of chest pain.
