Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, 72, underwent surgery for a lung ailment at the Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday. Doctors refused to give details, but a hospital source said there was a lesion in Shinde's lung.
'The lesion in the chest was removed using a minimal invasive procedure, with the help of video-assisted technology. Shinde is completely fine now,' said one of the doctors treating him. The lesion is asymptomatic and was detected early during one of Shinde's routine check-ups. The surgery was performed by oncologists Dr RA Deshpande and A Jog.
Shinde's family told DNA that it was a minor operation and that he was recuperating. 'He is expected to be discharged in a week,' said Raj Shroff, Shinde's son-in-law. 'Even close family members were not allowed to meet him till evening. He had been admitted to the intensive care unit,' said Subhash Chavan, MLC and a long-time supporter of the home minister.
CM Prithviraj Chavan and Shinde attended an iftar party hosted by state minister Arif Naseem Khan at the Haj House on Saturday evening after which the home minister was admitted.
