Sunita Williams Latest News: NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Barry 'Butch' Wilmore who are currently stranded at the International Space Station (ISS), are finally set to comeback to the Earth by mid-March. Their journey, which was initially planned as a week-long space mission, turned into a long wait after their Boeing Starliner spacecraft was detected with technical issues.
While several reports about her deteriorating health have emerged in the last few weeks, in a recent news conference, the NASA astronaut described the experience of her extended stay at the space, as an "emotional rollercoaster," highlighting the psychological hurdles astronauts encounter when separated from their families and the familiar comforts of Earth for prolonged periods. "I can't wait to see my Labrador dogs again," she said. This wait is more difficult for our family than it is for us. It has been like an emotional rollercoaster for them," Williams shared.
Despite the various health challenges, Williams said that she remains in awe of the ISS. In the conference, the NASA astronaut said that she disagrees with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who believes the station should be decommissioned early. "This place is in its prime. It's not time to quit," she said.
Reflecting on her extended stay, she shared, "This has been Butch and my third flight to the ISS. We helped put it together, and we've watched it change over the years. Just living here gives us a unique perspective not just from looking out the window, but on how to solve problems. I don't want to lose that spark of inspiration and perspective when I leave, so I'm going to have to bottle it up somehow."
Why Is Sunita Williams Stuck In Space?
Indian-origin, Sunita Williams and fellow NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore were launched in June last year aboard Boeing's new Starliner capsule. However, soon after they reached the ISS, the global space agency detected technical faults in their spacecraft, which made their return difficult and delayed. Due to safety concerns, NASA decided to return the capsule without passengers, leaving Williams and Wilmore stranded.
Their return has been repeatedly delayed as NASA awaited a safe alternative. Now, with SpaceX's Crew-10 mission set for 12 March, their replacements will finally arrive. The returning astronauts are scheduled to depart on 19 March in an older SpaceX capsule.

Prolonged exposure to microgravity can leave an astronaut dealing with serious mental and psychological health challenges. Bone Density Loss
Extended exposure to microgravity can take a serious toll on bone density. In Earth's gravity, bones remain strong because they constantly bear weight. But in space, where gravity is absent, bones lose minerals at a rate of 1-1.5% per month. This means that spending over 9 months at the ISS has taken a serious toll on Williams' bone density condition. This condition is also known as Spaceflight Osteoporosis.
Muscle Atrophy And Extreme Weakness
The next health trouble that Sunita Williams is expected to face is muscle atrophy, also known as muscle weakness. When on Earth, the gravitational force constantly works against our muscles, keeping them engaged and strong. On the contrary, when the human body is exposed to microgravity, it doesn't really face any such engagements. In space, muscles are not required to support body weight, leading to rapid deterioration. Studies show that astronauts can lose up to 20% of their muscle mass in just 5 to 11 days in space.
Many astronauts return from space reporting blurred vision, difficulty focusing, or changes in eye shape. This condition, known as Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS), occurs due to fluid shifts in microgravity.
Radiation Exposure And Cancer Risk
Outside Earth's protective atmosphere, astronauts are exposed to cosmic radiation that can increase their risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The radiation levels in space are 10 times higher than on Earth, with deep-space missions (such as Mars expeditions) posing even greater risks.
NASA has confirmed that both Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore will soon return, closing a long and unexpected chapter in their mission. In its recent statement, the US-based space agency also said that their replacements will travel in a used SpaceX capsule, and before departing, Williams and Wilmore will spend nearly a week with the incoming crew. By the time they land, they will have spent almost ten months in orbit far longer than they ever anticipated.
