Suffering from a headache? Lower your salt intake

Washington, Dec 14: Do you prefer salty foods over sugary ones? If yes, then you might be at a higher risk of getting a headache. Because, according to a recent research study has revealed that consumption of diet risk in salt (salty foods) is the major causes for headaches in most people.The study findings were published in the journal BMJ Open.

Who conducted the study?

The study was co-authored by Lawrence Appel, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research at Johns Hopkins. It proved that most of the Americans consume goods high in sodium as compared to the other study participants. (Read: Reduce daily salt intake to less than 5 grams per adult, recommends WHO)

What did the results indicate?

The study revealed that individuals consuming foods high in sodium (approximately 8 grams of sodium per day) experienced 1/3rd more headaches as compared to individuals who consumed foods low in sodium (around 4 grams of sodium in a day). The difference in the susceptibility to headaches continued despite what the volunteers consumed. i;e, whether they consumed a standard North American diet or ate a diet that was designed to lower hypertension. The study thus, proved that people can avoid headache to certain extent by simply reducing their intake of sodium through diet.
