Study: 1,300 people die of cancer in India every day, followed by tuberculosis

Cancer is undoubtedly one of the common lifestyle diseases affecting India, whereas tuberculosis ranks second.

Cancer has ranked as one of the leading causes of deaths in India, followed by tuberculosis. According to statistics by the National Cancer Registry Programme of the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR), there has been a 6% increase in the cancer mortality from 2012 to 2014. Also, it has been reported that around 1,300 deaths are occurring every day due to cancer.

Statistics of cancer deaths in India

A senior Health Ministry official said that around 1 lakh cancer patients died in the year 2014.

In 2014 -- Of the total number of 28,20,179 cases of cancer, around 4,91,598 people died.

In 2013 Around 4,78,180 deaths out of 29,34,314 cases were reported.

In 2012 Whereas approximately 30,16,628 cases were reported, of which around 4,65,169 people lost their lives.

Major causes/risk factors for increase in cancer mortality

The key factors that has been found to increase your risk of cancer and thus, increase in the number of cancer deaths are

  • Excessive use of tobacco and its products
  • Inactive lifestyle and stress
  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Large number of ageing population
  • Lack of proper diagnostic facilities

Statistics of tuberculosis deaths in India

Tuberculosis, a respiratory disease, is the second leading cause of deaths in the country. As per the records of the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, approximately 63,265 casualties were reported in 2011. Whereas in the year 2012 and 2013, the number of deaths due to tuberculosis were 61,887 and 57,095 respectively.

Initiatives from the Government

For cancer

The government has approved a scheme in 2013-14 for enhancing the specialised consultative care for cancer in the country. Also, guidelines for strengthening of the facilities were circulated to the states in January 2014. (Read: Latest research and advances in cancer treatment)

For Tuberculosis

The government, under the programme, provides free of cost diagnosis and treatment facilities including anti-TB drugs to patients.

We have established designated microscopy centres for quality diagnosis of every one lakh population in the general areas and for every 50,000 population in the tribal, hilly and difficult areas, the official said.

There are 13,000 microscopy centres in the country and more than six lakh directly observed treatment centres, the official added. (Read: DOTS and its 5 basic measures to deal with tuberculosis)
