Study: A 10-fold increase in obese kids and adolescents by 2022

October 11th is World Obesity Day and the theme for this year is "treat obesity now and avoid the consequences later."

A report in 2016 by the World Health Organization revealed that 41 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese. In 2016, there were 50 million girls and 74 million boys with obesity in the world, while the global number of moderately or severely underweight girls and boys was 75 million and 117 million respectively. However, according to a recent study by Imperial College London and WHO, there is a tenfold increase in childhood and adolescent obesity (aged five to 19 years) in four decades worldwide. The study further revealed that if current trends continue, more children and adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely underweight by 2022. The study further revealed that if current trends continue, more children and adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely underweight by 2022. Lead author Professor Majid Ezzati, of Imperial s School of Public Health, attributes food marketing, policies, pricing behind obesity rise. Here are few bits from the study on obesity in India.

  • Other countries with low BMI in both sexes in 2016 were Niger, Senegal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
  • Prevalence of moderate and severe underweight was highest in India, at 22 7% (16 7 29 6) among girls and 30 7% (23 5 38 0) among boys.
  • Obesity prevalence was between 1% and 2% among girls in Cambodia, Burkina Faso, Vietnam, Ethiopia, India, Madagascar, Republic of the Congo, Japan, Nepal, Niger, and Chad.

  1. Make your kid play outdoors and not sit in front of a computer so that they lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
  2. Do not store junk foods like cookies, chips and packaged food in your kitchen. Load up your fridge with fresh fruits and salads.

  4. Limit eating out and going for restaurant visits. Make your kid eat healthy, home cooked food.
  5. Do not cut down on calorie restriction and make sure your kids have nutrient-rich, healthy diet.
