Strict Isolation, Proper Documentation: Delhi Health Officials Issues Advisory Amid HMPV Cases Surge In China
HMPV In China: In response to reports of increased Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in China, Delhi health authorities have issued a comprehensive advisory to mitigate potential health risks within the capital.
As per the current advisory, all the hospitals in Delhi have been asked to report cases of Influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) through the IHIP portal. The health body has also urged the hospital authorities to be strict about isolating suspected patients with symptoms of pneumonia or high fever. "The hospitals must be strict about isolating suspected cases and following standard safety measures".
Proper documentation requirements have also been established for SARI cases and laboratory-confirmed influenza instances to facilitate accurate tracking.

Apart from these, all the healthcare facilities in the national capital have been instructed to ensure the availability of critical medications, including paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, cough syrups, and oxygen, to manage mild to moderate cases effectively.
Human metapneumovirus, also known as HMPV, is a respiratory virus that attacks the lower and upper lungs after entering the body. The virus was first identified in 2001 by Dutch researchers, and is reportedly spreading rapidly in China and Malaysia. As per studies, the HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which includes other respiratory pathogens like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Some of the common symptoms of the virus include -- fever, persistent cough, body aches, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.
While experts have urged India to remain vigilant, data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) as of January 2, 2025, indicate no significant increase in respiratory illnesses in India.
Amid rising concerns over another possible pandemic outbreak in India due to the HMPV, the Union Health Ministry has asserted that there is no immediate cause for alarm and that the country is fully prepared to tackle a possible HMPV pandemic-like situation.
