Is Student Mental Health Taken Too Lightly? Why School Pressure Is Breaking Young Minds
From this incident a lot of questions has been raised like Are we taking student mental health too lightly?Regrettably, the answer appears to be yes most of the time.Students are under tremendous pressure, nowadays, not only in academic, competitiveness, discipline, fear of failure, comparison with others, and even in some cases by teachers who might be ignorant of the impact of their words or deed on young minds. School is an environment that is a source of stress to many children instead of a supportive environment.Teachers, parents and children are often left to cope with increased expectations single handedly as they are often overloaded, over busy, and parents are often busy. Even a slight remark, such as you are not trying hard enough, others can do it, why can you not or even being in front of other children in a school and being publicly insulted in the classroom and can be embarrassing or intimidating to a young child. What may appear to be normal discipline to adults may end up being emotional punishment to a child.
In most Indian families, emotional trauma is simply swept under the carpet by such lines as It is normal, You will be fine, or, Don't think too much. Due to this fact, children are afraid to open up. They are afraid of judgment, not being understood or being accused of excusing. Consequently, they struggle with months and maybe years of silent apprehension, tension, and self distrust. Even schools tend to be very much concerned with the marks, performance and discipline, but not so much concerned about emotional well being. School based mental health counsellors are either not accessible. Students are not aware of where they are to go when they are overwhelmed. The fact that there is no safe and confidential place to discuss the issues can aggravate their condition.
