Differences Between First and Second Pregnancies
Every pregnancy is unique. You cannot make a comparison of the first pregnancy to the second pregnancy. It is not necessarily easier as some of the symptoms may be the same, less or even worse. Healthcare professionals claim that symptoms like morning sickness, indigestion and constipation may appear sooner in the second pregnancy, when compared to the first pregnancy.
Feeling more fatigue in the second pregnancy is evident, as mother have to take care of their first child. An expectant mother may also experience back pain early since the stomach muscles are weaker due to the first pregnancy. Experts warn of early baby kicks and Braxton Hicks contractions.
And the classic difference of the first pregnancy versus a second pregnancy is baby bumps appearing early due to the expansion of abdominal muscles and skin. The good news is that with a second child, breastfeeding becomes smoother, including shorter labour and delivery time.
The best part of a second pregnancy is the comfort of familiarity. That does not mean that you should neglect yourself or stop preparing for the second baby. The National Institute of Health (NIH) states, "During their second pregnancies, women have different degrees of anxiety and depression.
"Pregnancy is a special time in a woman's life when a foetus develops and grows inside her body. The internal environment of the pregnant woman's body changes significantly, and she also faces many external stimuli from her family and society. The combination of many internal and external factors makes pregnant women susceptible to severe and persistent psychological stress."
