Sitaram Yechury, Veteran CPM Leader, Dies At 72 After Battling Respiratory Illness

Sitaram Yechury was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on August 19 for treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection.

CPI(M) leader and CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury died on Wednesday afternoon. He was 72. Yechury was admitted to AIIMS New Delhi, where he was being treated for an acute respiratory tract infection. Yechury had been in a critical condition for the last few days and was on respiratory support.

The CPM leader was admitted to the emergency ward of AIIMS on August 19 and later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to the reports, the CPI(M) veteran was suffering from a pneumonia-like infection, but doctors had not disclosed the exact nature of the ailment. Mr Yechury recently underwent cataract surgery.
