Liam Gleason, 41, head coach of men's Lacrosse at Siena University, passed away after a serious fall at his New York home. The university confirmed his passing in an official statement on Wednesday.

Liam Gleason's Cause Of Death

According to the school, the 41-year-old, cause of death is due to traumatic brain injury three days after he fell at his home. Chuck Seifert, Siena President, said, "A sudden, senseless loss carries a kind of pain that defies understanding. It's hard to imagine anyone more universally loved and admired than Liam. Our community was blessed by Coach Gleason's life."

The sudden loss of Liam Gleason has left the collegiate sports community in shock. He led the Saints to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. The 41-year-old is left with a wife and three children.

Liam Gleason's family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for supporting the three children and the wife of the Siena Lacrosse coach. The fundraise which is created with the intention to cover medical and family expenses is quickly growing, surpassing over 500,000 dollars.

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a brain injury that is caused by a violent blow or jolt to the head or body. TBIs are sometimes called a brain injury or even a head injury. The National Institute of Health (NIH) states, "A forceful bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body can cause it, but not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI."

"Some types of TBI can cause temporary or short-term problems with brain function, including problems with how a person thinks, understands, moves, communicates, and acts. More serious TBIs can lead to severe and permanent disability and even death."

How Does TBI Affect The Brain?

According to healthcare professionals, traumatic brain injury can stay in one place, known as a focal injury. However, it can happen over a widespread area, known as diffuse injury. A person who has a head injury may experience bleeding, swelling, and tearing that injure the nerve fibers. Some of the most common medical conditions after a person experiences a head injury include:

• Diffuse axonal injury (DAI
• Concussion
• Hematomas
• Contusions
• Skull fractures
• Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)
• Post-traumatic dementia (PTD)

Who Is More At Risk? Causes

Studies show that men are more likely to die from TBI than women and older adults above the age of 65 are at greater risk of getting hospitalized and dying from head injuries. Some of the leading causes of TBI include:

1. Falls: One of the most common causes of TBI, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a tragic fall.
2. Blunt trauma accident: Sudden accidents that involve being struck by or against an object, particularly sports-related injuries can cause TBI.
3. Motor vehicle accidents: According to research, motor vehicle and bicycle accidents are the third most common cause of TBI which can sometimes lead to fatal accidents.
