Shreyas Iyer has returned to India and is recovering well after a near-fatal spleen damage sustained while fielding during an ODI against Australia last month. Iyer sustained a hard injury to his abdomen while making a difficult catch in the deep, resulting in a laceration of the spleen and internal haemorrhage. According to reports, if the BCCI medical staff had not intervened in time, Iyer's vital signs would have fallen to dangerous levels, making the injury lethal. He underwent a treatment to control the bleeding and was later released once stabilised.

So happy to see you and so happy to see Shreyas recovering well and coming out (for once) Thank you Rohini for always being awesome. Loved bumping into Dino as always. From meeting old friends to making new ones."
"In any splenic rupture, exercise and activities such as weight-training is allowed only after completion of two months following the injury. It would take him two to three weeks thereafter to regain full match fitness," a BCCI source said.
A spleen injury occurs when the spleen is injured as a result of a fall, abdominal hit or accident. The spleen is located on the left side of the body beneath the rib cage and aids in filtering blood and destroying infections. It is potentially dangerous, as when it is injured, it may bleed in the abdomen.
Here are the common causes of spleen injury:
Doctors will most often categorise it depending on the severity of the tear or bleeding. It includes cases of light bruising and severe cuts or ruptures. The repercussions of the injury are more serious with the increase in the grade.
The result is dependent on the severity of the injury:
For mild to moderate injuries
Physicians can opt to use non-surgical management. This consists of rest, close observation, repeated scanning and pain management. The patient is normally observed in a hospital in case of bleeding.
For severe injuries
In case of severe damage to the spleen or internal haemorrhage that cannot be stopped, surgery might be required. A surgery may entail the repair of the spleen, or there are cases where it may be removed.
Life after spleen removal
When the spleen is removed, the individual can live like any normal person, but he/she is somehow susceptible to infections. The vaccines against some of the bacteria are administered before or after surgery. The preventive antibiotics may also be recommended by physicians.
Always consult a doctor immediately in case of such severe injuries. Stay alert and stay safe.
