Ina shocking case of medical malpractice, 3 branches of the Fortis hospitals in Mulund, Andheri and Vashi were found guilty of not only recycling medical devices meant for single us, but also billing multiple patients for its use. FDA, in a crackdown on the hospitals, found that not only had the hospital reused medical devices meant for single use, but had also charged multiple patients for its usage. Not just that, there are discrepancies in how much the hospital charged the patients too. For a device that costed the hospital about Rs 6000, the patients were charged over Rs 20,000. Moreover, the hospital reused these devices without the receiving patient's knowledge or consent. FDA's crackdown found that between the three branches of the hospital, in the Mulund branch alone 66 of the medical devices meant for single-use were used on more than 45 patients. The devices, after use, were send for cleaning and sterilisation to the hospitals sterilisation department, where it was sterilised using ethyl oxide, and sent back for reusing. The FDA has issued a show cause notice to the hospital's three branches. The devices that were reused included one-time use devices like balloon catheters and guiding catheters that are used for angioplasty procedure for correcting blocked arteries.
